How do you know what kids need to learn for self-defense?

Well, we started by going straight to the source and asked our current Warrior students about the issues/problems they see at school and outside of school. Here is a summary of what they told us:

  • The majority of things started with some kid saying mean things about friends/family and general trash talking. It can be a one time interaction, or ongoing bullying. Other things were more random.
  • A kid was punched in the face and he fell to the ground. Then the attacker got down on his knee and kept punching the kid.
  • Getting “checked” into a wall or locker.
  • “General fighting” with punches and shoving.
  • Getting pushed to the ground and falling backwards, getting up but they keep on getting pushed.
  • Girls fighting, lots of pushing. One girl was pushed to the ground. The other girl got on top and then they both started pulling hair.
  • At their lockers, in a  crowded hallway, some kids will open hand slap other kids in the head.
  • Running around the track in gym class, some kids will run into other kids on purpose.
  • Multiple bullies on one kid with the kid being pushed around, and pushed to the ground.
  • Saw a kid get semi-picked-up and then dropped onto the ground. Older sibling came to intervene.
  • Kid was being kicked while down on the ground.

What will my child learn to help them navigate these issues?

As a parent, it can feel discouraging to read that list and start worrying about your child. Thankfully these things aren’t rampant, but it is important to be prepared. With the list above, we then put together a introduction course that addresses the most pressing self-defense needs that our kids are seeing in our society today.

  • General Fitness – Self-Defense starts with you having a sound mind and body.
  • Discipline and Respect – Most of the fights that our Warriors told us about started with someone disrespecting someone else, or someone important to the other person. It can take a lot of discipline to not get sucked into a fight that doesn’t need to happen.
  • De-escalation and Avoidance  Spotting a potential issue and leaving, or using our words to de-escalate the situation.
  • Emotional Resiliency – Skills to be able to help regulate emotional responses to someone verbally attacking a loved one/friend to illicit a response out of the person.
  • Safely Dealing with Falls – As you can see above, there are a number of instances where there was a fall. In a fight, falling is one of the most dangerous things that can happen.
  • Defenses to Punches – Doesn’t happen quite as often with younger kids, however, defenses to punches are extremely similar to defenses to pushes. Those similarities can make learning the defenses much easier for all students.
  • Third Party (8 – 12 year olds only)- “Low level” third party intervention on behalf of a friend. This is a loaded topic, but some kids have the urge to help those in need. They need the proper skills to help de-escalate/resolve the situation as best they can.
  • Protecting Yourself on the Ground – Fights will generally end up on the ground at some point. It’s important to know how to defend yourself from punches and kicks while you are ground, and it’s also important to know how and when to stand back up.
